Wanna Go Out With You Tonight is exactly the kind of album this site was made to draw attention to. It’s classic but memorable, not a masterpiece but definitely good, and with just 1 monthly listener on Spotify (who I guess is me), it’s not hard to see why The Wedon’tgiveafucks immediately made my to-review list.
The 2015 album is the only release by the German band, but it’s not said to stay that way! You see, The Wedon’tgiveafucks are also the first band I’ve reviewed here with any kind of social media presence, sporting a Facebook page with just under 400 followers. It used to be quite active, letting us know that the band was gigging relatively often up until 2 years ago, however the latest post dates to November of 2022. Though that’s not the best sign, hope is still alive that they just stopped posting and didn’t split up.
Length-wise, Wanna Go Out With You Tonight almost feels more like an extended EP. It clocks in at only 8 tracks (none of which pass the 2 minute mark) for a total runtime of 13 minutes, perfect for cooking pasta or a walk to the shop. It mostly sticks to a classic punk rock sound, both writing and production-wise. It’s relatively raw and impactful, high energy, and talks about masked intruders, UFOs, and, naturally, partying. The vocalist’s accent makes it feel more DIY, and the group backing vocals add a street punk feel.
We begin with The World’s in Trouble, a pump-up opener followed by Masked Intruder, whose intro is reminiscent of Screeching Weasel’s Stupid Over You or My Brain Hurts. The third track, I Gotta Go Tonight has a chorus a bit too repetitive and long for my taste, though the bridge is good. Next up is the title track. It’s jumpy, energetic, catchy, and mentions Blitzkrieg Bop. Me likey.
Young, Frustrated, Radioactive is also repetitive, but this time it works in its favour. The chorus is pumped and makes me wanna sing along, but my favourite part is the “whoa-oh” outro. The switch from the minor chorus to the major outro is fresh and in general feels really good. Toblerone Bombers is there for its sound, not the writing. It’s not the most original track, but it serves its purpose – it arrives, dishes out a dose of energy, and leaves.
I Wanted It All has a generic verse, but a pretty unique and enjoyable chorus! The post-chorus also features a juicy bass riff. Nice. Following is U.F.O., the last track on the album, and one of my favourites. It’s catchy from bar 1, the vocalist’s deadpan delivery of “A U.F.O., what the fuck? I don’t believe.” paints a cool picture of this guy being shocked but also really done with the whole thing. The solo again smells like a certain Weasel in a good way, and just like that, it’s over.
Nice. I’m satisfied. It’s been probably about a year since I first heard this album, and I’ve since listened to it over a dozen, maybe two dozen times. Though it feels a little generic, it definitely has its moments, and since they are packed into a mere 13 minutes, it’s more than worth a listen. Give it a spin, and here’s hoping for more bangers from The Wedon’tgiveafucks!
